Michelle Obama has been an open advocate for bringing healthy meals to our schools and homes ever since she became our nation’s First Lady.  She even discussed how she got her own two girls eating vegetables.

With that said, an NBA champ and vegan advocate, John Salley, challenges our first lady to lead 2016 by example by Choosing Vegan for 30 days.

In the letter to FLOTUS, the former champion writes: “Vegan eating is not just a slam dunk for human health; it’s also the most effective way to combat climate change.”

“I urge you to set an example for families all across the country by committing to going vegan for 30 days in 2016. By taking the pledge during your final year serving as First Lady, you will send a clear message to Americans that going vegan is one of the best things a person can do for their health, for animals, and for the environment.”

Salley is not the only vegan athlete out there spreading the word.  Former NFL linebacker, David Carter, also spreading an awareness through his blog, The 300 Pound Vegan.

He first went vegan for health reasons, after watching Forks Over Knives, but now says ethics and the environment impact  is why he will never again eat anything from an animal.

In his interview with VegNews, Carter stated that going vegan was his Valentine’s Day gift to his wife, who has been a vegan for 7 years. “I couldn’t ignore it anymore. It’s common sense, and people ignore the facts.”

He continued, “When they got to the part where they were talking about how milk leeches calcium from bones and causes tendonitis, and how meat and dairy lead to all these diseases and these studies proved it, at that point I sat my milkshake down and was like, ‘I’m done.'”

With Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” initiative to educate children about the importance of healthy eating habits and physical fitness, David’s message hits right on the target.

And Salley is correct that by taking the vegan challenge, our First Lady would be setting a great example that by “going vegan is one of the best things a person can do for their health, for animals, and for the environment.”
